Darn Tough socks are the best I've found. They last about 2 years of daily use. Hiker micro crew is great for mid-height hiking boots and cycling shoes. They have just the right amount of cushioning in the heel that extends high enough, which has become important since the Scarpa and Asolo shoes I use often have a seam in the middle of the heel, rubbing the foot/sock. The elastic shaft also stays straight and doesn't slide down when walking. The cheerful color options are a plus.

Surprisingly soft and thick sock. Comfortable in the shoe, fits well. S size 37.5 just right for a wide and tall back, luckily I didn't choose a bigger one.
