A throw rope is a rescue tool used especially in water rescue situations, such as when moving on ice if someone falls in. It is a long, floating rope packed in an easily throwable bag. The throw rope is designed to be quickly and accurately thrown to a person in need of help.


Many confuse flotation and rescue suits - and no wonder. The difference between flotation and rescue suits is that a flotation suit is a garment with buoyant elements placed inside like a life jacket - the person in the water gets wet, but when used correctly, the flotation suit prevents sinking. A rescue suit, on the other hand, relies on tight latex or neoprene cuffs around the wrists and neck to prevent water from entering the suit.

Ensure the ice is thick enough and safe for skating. Generally, ice at least 5-10 cm thick is safe, but this can vary depending on conditions. Never go tour skating alone. It's good to have company so that help is available quickly if needed.
Plan your route in advance and make sure you know the ice conditions in the area. It's good to use GPS devices for navigation, but a more experienced navigator can also manage with a map.
