What to consider when choosing a backpack?

アウトドア・アクティビティ, キノコ狩り, ハンティング, キャンプ, 選択ガイド by Ilari H., 22.11.2021

Backpacks are often an indispensable accessory in daily life and when outdoors. For example, snacks and possible extra clothes or other items taken on a day trip need to be packed somewhere, and carrying them in a plastic bag on nature trails is not a very appealing idea. In daily life, the same backpack can also be used for carrying items related to studying or working.

Backpack Size

Choosing the right backpack involves several steps. The first step is to decide what size backpack you need. Consider what you plan to carry in the backpack. If possible, try packing these items into a suitably sized cardboard box. By measuring the dimensions of the box, you can calculate its volume, which provides a rough estimate of the backpack's volume needed. For example, a backpack suitable for day trips typically has a volume of about 20 - 30 liters. If the items you’re carrying are just, for example, a thermos bottle and a sandwich, they might fit into a slightly smaller 10 - 20-liter backpack. For such needs, convenient options include also backpacks that pack into their own pocket. On the other hand, a lightweight hiker can fit equipment and supplies for a longer hike into a 30 - 40-liter backpack.

The fit of a backpack depends on many factors

The fit of a backpack is crucial to its comfort, much like with clothing and shoes. A backpack that fits well on your back is significantly more comfortable to carry and doesn’t feel as heavy. If possible, it’s advisable to try on the backpack in-store. This way, you can test the fit with added weight before making a purchase decision.

Some backpacks are sold in one size, while others are available in different sizes (such as S/M and L/XL). The size of the backpack affects, among other things, the length of the back panel. In backpacks equipped with a sturdy hip belt, the correct size is a crucial factor because a hip belt positioned at the wrong height will not transfer the weight from the shoulders to the hips as intended.

The shoulder straps of the backpack also play a significant role in fit. Some backpacks have wider shoulder straps, while others have narrower ones. Some backpacks have shoulder straps made from stiffer materials, while others have more flexible ones. The shapes, adjustability, and the proximity of the attachment points for the straps on the upper part of the backpack vary between models. If the attachment points are too close together or the straps are too wide, they can rub against the neck.

Some backpacks use chest straps that connect the shoulder straps. These straps help tighten the backpack to your back, preventing it from bouncing.

Other features of backpacks

In addition to fit, a backpack may need other features depending on its use. If you want a general-purpose backpack for daily use, it’s important that you like its appearance. If you carry, for example, a laptop in the backpack, a dedicated compartment for it can be a great addition.

The pockets on the backpack also matter. Some backpacks have only one large main compartment, while others offer several smaller pockets. The most common way to open and close pockets is with a zipper, but some models also use clips, snaps, Velcro, or other solutions.

One important consideration is whether you want a hip belt on your backpack. For everyday use with lighter loads, a hip belt is often not necessary. However, in uneven terrain and with heavier loads, a hip belt can be very beneficial. It helps to keep the load stable without swaying and distributes some of the weight to the hips, reducing strain on the shoulders. Different backpacks have various hip belts, ranging from lighter to more robust, for different purposes.

If you often move around in rainy conditions with your backpack or plan to take it on, for example, a kayaking trip, it’s a good idea to get a waterproof backpack. Certain activities may also require specific special features from the backpack.
