Some backpacks have straps made from stiffer materials, while others have more flexible straps. The shapes, adjustability, and the proximity of the attachment points for the straps on the upper part of the backpack vary between models. If the attachment points are too close together or the straps are too wide, they can rub against the neck. Some backpacks use hip and/or chest straps that connect the shoulder straps. These straps help tighten the backpack to your back, preventing it from bouncing.

In addition to fit, a backpack may need other features depending on its use. If you want a general-purpose backpack for daily use, it’s important that you like its appearance. The most common way to open and close pockets is with a zipper, but some models also use clips, snaps, Velcro, or other solutions. Certain activities may also require specific special features from the backpack.
