The 8x57 JS is a first-class cartridge for distances up to about 180 m. It is ideal for hunting in the woods and as cartridge for drive hunting. It is also a first-class large game cartridge for Central European game. It is readily used as a universal cartridge there. As a rule, there is less haematoma formation than with rapid smaller calibres.
The 8x57 JS was developed from the old military cartridge 8x57 J by increasing the bullet diameter from .318 to .323" (8.08 / 8.20 mm), and an "S" was added to the designation. It was introduced in 1905 and the hunters soon appreciated it.
