I've used this a couple of times in the forest while orienteering, and I haven't been able to close the pocket tightly, meaning the closing mechanism, where the thicker plastic part is pushed into the groove, only works from one side. This still works in the field, but in a canoe I would definitely want a waterproof bag, if it's promised to be one.
The mechanism of the fastening cords doesn't seem to be terribly sturdy either, the fastener on one end already came loose and disappeared. Of course, it got stuck on a branch etc. while I was moving, so maybe you can't blame the manufacturer for that alone.
The plastic seems to be of good quality, the case is also handy to use when folded, and I will definitely continue to use this rather than a regular plastic pocket.
** Addition, less than a week after the original review: I dropped the stars from two to one. Today in the forest, the map pocket disappeared completely, as the drawstrings had apparently failed again, even though I had tied them in several knots when the clips didn't work. I noticed too late that I only had a backpack, compass, etc., but no map bag. In other words, a pocket that couldn't be closed properly and whose lanyard wouldn't stay on. Disappointing! It is watertight although bit hard to open.

The velcro strips that keep the bag folded in two quickly stopped sticking to each other. A big bag is annoying hanging around your neck in the mountain wind when it doesn't stay folded. The closing mechanism of the bag is also rigid and quite difficult to close. Without these flaws, the bag would be really great.
