When thinking about a new travel companion, the criteria were at least one external pocket, a place for a drinking bottle, a waist belt, durable, relatively water-repellent material and a pleasing appearance. I valued between 28 and 35 liters, and even if a few extra liters would have been fine, the larger one just didn't fit my frame (165 cm tall, short back). I was positively surprised by how much this smaller one ate up stuff with a small tetris and even though the waist belt wasn't as stiff as the larger one, it did its job. I think the hidden pockets on the waist belt are really handy, but this smaller model doesn't have any straps for the shoulder straps, of course they probably didn't think of putting this in the hold. Since ordering it, the 28-liter has been in New Zealand for a couple of weeks and a long weekend in Europe. When flying domestically, it slipped neatly under the seat as a backpack with a small amount of stuff. The fact that the bag opens like a suitcase is both a good and a bad thing, depending on the situation. Overall, I am happy with the purchase and believe that the bag will be a handy travel companion on both longer and shorter trips. For those who are thinking between this and a larger model, I would give you a tip: test both fully packed on your back to see if they are suitable for you.
